Tips: Paste Your Phone Number into DialPad

You may have upgraded your iPhone to iPhone OS 3.1. There is one minor feature you may not know but you’ll definitely find it useful. It’s not an revolutionary feature but very handy:

Copy and paste phone number into the Dialpad

iPhone comes with a built-in capability to detect number as phone number, so you can tap and make the call directly. However, not all number are detected correctly as phone number. Before iPhone OS 3.1, when you come across such phone number in note, web page or documents, you need to memorize the phone number and key it in the dialpad. With the upgrade to 3.1, you can simply copy the phone number and paste it into the dialpad to make your call.

Copy & paste a phone number is the same as you copy any other text on iPhone. Simply tap on the phone number and hold for a second. iPhone will pop up a context menu for you to select and copy the phone number. With the text copied, go to Phone application and paste back the phone number to make your call.

Microsoft Releases Bing.com-For iPhone?

Microsoft releases its new search engine called Bing.com that intends to replace the Live.com search and challenges the leading position of Google. Bing.com is now live and you can try it out yourself. But one tip to use the full-featured Bing is that you’ll need to set the country to United States. Otherwise, you may only see a stripped-down version of Bing.com.

Microsoft’s new search engine is pretty good. The interface is simple with an awesome image as the background, which will change daily. The search is very fast and the search results are much better that in Live.com. I especially found the image search useful. The image search results can be filtered by size, layout, color, style (photograph / illustration) and people.

So, will I switch from Google to Bing.com? For now, the answer is no. The index size of Bing is relatively smaller than that of Google. I still feel more satisfied for the search result returned by Google, just based on a few test searches. And, of course, I already get used to Google’s simple interface.

And, one thing you and I may concern is whether Bing.com works on iPhone. I launched mobile Safari on iPhone and type in www.bing.com. Bing! It directs me to Live Search. Obviously, bing.com is still not iPhone (or even mobile) ready. Anyway, it’s good to see an early start of Bing and you can head to bing.com to test it out.

How to Passcode Lock Your iPhone

We all worry about misplacing our precious phones or, worse yet, having them stolen. Some may even worry about snoopers trying to read our private info when we’re not looking. In case one of these things happen, you should really consider protecting all of your personal data on the device.

From the homescreen, tap the Settings icon. From there you will want to press the General tab.

Once you are within the general settings tab you will see Passcode Lock is set to off.

Now tap Passcode Lock and you will be prompted to enter a four digit passcode.

After entering your four digit code you will now see the following options.

• Require Passcode: allows you to select a time period that has to pass before the lock is enabled. If you don’t want to have to enter your code too frequently but still want some protection, you can set this to 15 minutes or even 1 hour or more.
• Show SMS Preview: on by default, this shows incoming text messages on your homescreen. Turning this feature to off will only display “New Text Message” on the home screen, which can keep the identity of your texter safe from snooping eyes if that’s a concern.
• Erase Data: simply erases all data on your iPhone after 10 failed passcode attempts. This is the nuclear option, but if you’re really worried about losing your iPhone and have really important data on it, it can be something to consider.

Once you have configured your settings as you see fit, tap your home button to exit and that’s all there is to it. You have successfully passcode locked your iPhone. It’s as simple as that.
