Microsoft Releases Bing.com-For iPhone?

9 06 2009

bingiconMicrosoft releases its new search engine called Bing.com that intends to replace the Live.com search and challenges the leading position of Google. Bing.com is now live and you can try it out yourself. But one tip to use the full-featured Bing is that you’ll need to set the country to United States. Otherwise, you may only see a stripped-down version of Bing.com.

Microsoft’s new search engine is pretty good. The interface is simple with an awesome image as the background, which will change daily. The search is very fast and the search results are much better that in Live.com. I especially found the image search useful. The image search results can be filtered by size, layout, color, style (photograph / illustration) and people.

So, will I switch from Google to Bing.com? For now, the answer is no. The index size of Bing is relatively smaller than that of Google. I still feel more satisfied for the search result returned by Google, just based on a few test searches. And, of course, I already get used to Google’s simple interface.

And, one thing you and I may concern is whether Bing.com works on iPhone. I launched mobile Safari on iPhone and type in http://www.bing.com. Bing! It directs me to Live Search. Obviously, bing.com is still not iPhone (or even mobile) ready. Anyway, it’s good to see an early start of Bing and you can head to bing.com to test it out.

Amazon Kindle Store Are Optimizes For iPhone

24 05 2009

kindle_for_iphoneiconAmazon released a Kindle application for iPhone that lets you purchase Kindle-based book and read it on iPhone. If you have read my review on Amazon’s Kindle app, you probably know at that time, the Kindle store is not designed for iPhone. The Kindle app itself is great but the Kindle store is not easily to navigate and definitely drags customers away from purchasing books.

Just take a look at the old Kindle store, will you zoom in and out to shop around? Definitely not.

Now, Amazon achieves a great milestone for Kindle store, which is now optimized for iPhone Safari. As you launch the Kindle app and tap “Get Books” button, the app will take you to the iPhone-optimized Kindle store. The user experience is much better than the old one. It’s just simpler, less clutter and easier to navigate.

The home screen of Kindle store is pretty simple with just a search box and a few options that let you browse books by categories or look for top sellers. However, you may feel a bit strange when you perform a book search. Instead of displaying the search result inside the app, Kindle app shows the book result in iPhone’s Safari. After that, you can continue to navigate the store in Safari and buy books by using Amazon’s 1-click purchase.

Once the you purchase a book or download a sample chapter, the book is automatically downloaded right into your iPhone. And, you can immediately start reading it using the Kindle app. The iPhone-optimized Kindle store is a great improvement and definitely can attract more iPhone users to purchase Kindle books. But, it’s still not perfect. What I expect is a seamless experience that I can purchase books right inside in the Kindle app. Probably in a very near future, Amazon will take my request into account and rolls out a perfect Kindle app.

Share Contacts & Images Between iPhones Using Mover

13 05 2009

mover-iconThere is a common need among iPhone users to find applications or solutions to transfer contact or images between iPhones. Earlier, I have published a post about “How To Forward Contact On iPhone” and discussed three different approaches to share a contact with iPhone or other mobile phones. Now, I’ll introduce a new iPhone application called “Mover”, developed by Infinite Labs.

This app is really awesome, innovative and amazing. You’ll love the way that Mover introduces to share a contact or an image between iPhones. It’s simply fun! There is no better way to describe this app than a video. Let’s see it in action…

You can pick any image or contact and send them to nearby iPhone by using just a flick. The receiving iPhone then picks up the image or contact, which is automatically saved in Photos or Contacts.

However, there is one drawback of this iPhone app. To use Mover, both iPhones should be connected to the same WiFi network. Otherwise, the app can’t detect the nearby iPhone for contact or image sharing. Hope this limitation can be further improved when iPhone 3.0 is released. At that time, I believe Mover will allow file sharing between iPhones via Bluetooth. Mover is now available on App Store and it is absolutely free. You can download it via this direct iTunes link.
