Cydia Store: Now Opened For Business

21 03 2009

You should know Cydia, an alternative to the official App Store for downloading iPhone applications. And, Jay Freeman is the man behind Cydia.

Today, he makes another milestone for Cydia and opens up Cydia Store that lets you purchase apps from it. Why another iPhone App Store? Something you may not know is that not all iPhone developers can put up their crafted applications and sells it on App Store. Apple censors every iPhone application before it can show up on the store. If the application violates any restriction, the app gets buried. And, that’s why you’ll never see iPhone application like “Cycorder” that lets iPhone capture video or applications that lets turns iPhone as 3G modem.

However, Cydia does not impose tight restriction. And, the grand plan of Cydia Store is to let developers to sell hundreds of iPhone apps that cannot make into App Store. The recent article from The Wall Street Journal has a coverage on the Cydia Store. Quoted from the article, Jay Freeman mentioned that,

“The overworking goal is to provide choice,” he says. “It’s understandable that [Apple] wants to control things, but it has been very limiting for developers and users.”

Yes, we like choice and that’s one of the great reason to jailbreak iPhone. And, I believe competition is good. Two stores is definitely better than one.  And, as of now only one jailbreak app called Cyntact is available for purchase on the Cydia Store. I believe more apps will come soon. Anyway, I’ll buy this 1st application to show my support to Cydia Store.

TapSB: Bring Tabbed Home Screen To iPhone Soon!

23 02 2009

How many pages of iPhone applications do you have? I already got 9 pages of iPhone applications. As you install more applications on iPhone, you’ll find it’s more difficult to navigate through iPhone home screen. An application called “TapSB” will soon be released on iSpazio that lets you easily switch between different pages of iPhone applications.

tapsb

Simply double-tap on the home screen, TapSB will bring you thumbnail version of six different iPhone pages. Tap and select the one you’ll like to switch to and it will bring you directly to that screen. You should expect the application is for jailbroken iPhone only.

iPod Widget: Bring New Addons For SBSettings Toggle

12 01 2009

This provides an iPod play / pause widget available at Cydia for free. This widget allow you access your  iPod app without open and closed another apps, you just start playing music by pressing it at your SpringBoard. This widget solves this issue by giving you a play / pause button that will load a random track and start playing it. If you have paused a song, it will resume where you left off. If your iPod gets closed and reopened, iPhone rebooted or such, then it will randomly select a song and will not just start at the same song each time.

An alternative is to press power, then double tap home. This lets you start a track, then slide to unlock and you’re back to safari. This seemed ok at first. But unfortunately, it always starts playing on the same song. This was very annoying.

Before you use iPod widget, you have to install SBSettings first. Check out my post here on how to install SBSettings via Cydia.

Install iPod Widget Via Cydia

Step 1: Launch Cydia. Select “sections” at haptic menu, select “Add Ons” category and select “iPod Widget” or you can tap “Search” in Cydia and type “iPod Widget”.

Cydia

Step 2: Select “install” button at the right top and confirm it to install.

Step 3: If you iPod toggle still doesn’t appear on SBSettings, you have to setup first by launch SBSettings > press “More” button > select “Set Toggles” > and set iPod on > press “home” button and your iPhone restart automatically.

How To use iPod Widget

Without this widget and you are in an app like safari, and you want to start your iPod playing music, you have to exit the app, load the iPod app, start your music, and then reload safari once again. If you want to play you music while surfing internet using safari, just tap accross the status bar at the top or you can tap the status bar within 1-3 second and your SBSetting will pop up on your Home Screen.

iPod widget on SBSettings

As you can see on the screenshot above iPod toggle just appear on the SBSettings. The red colour indicate your iPod is switch off  and green colour indicate your iPod is switch on. What you want to do is just tap on this toggle to play or pause your music. Your music will resume by pressing it again where your left off.

You just press “Home Button” twice while using safari or read your email, and the simple button to control your music will pop up as screenshot below. Play Flash Video using iMobileCinema

3 01 2009

When you browse web page with embedded YouTube video using iPhone’s Safari, you will see a little blue cube, appear on your screen,  its mean the mobile Safari is not capable to play Flash, as well as, Flash video. So, when you come across any web page with flash video (e.g. YouTube video), Safari doesn’t show you the video but a little blue cube.

The recent release of iMobileCinema powers iPhone to playback flash video in Safari. iMobileCinema, which is still in beta, is a Safari plugin and only works on jailbreak iPhone. I have installed and tested on my iPhone. Yes, it does work on YouTube and Google Video. But for other websites with embedded YouTube videos, as I tested, it doesn’t work quite well. iMobileCinema detects the embedded video but you just can’t playback. As mentioned by the development team, iMobileCinema is still in beta. You’ll see better flash video support in coming official release.

iMobileCinema only support YouTube And Google Video for a meant time

Install iMobileCinema via Cydia

Step 1: Add the source (http://d.imobilecinema.com) at Cydia repository. For those who do not know how to add a source in Cydia, you can check out this post here.

Step 2: Launch Cydia. Select “sections” at haptic menu, select “Multimedia” category and select “iMobileCinema” or you can tap “Search” in Cydia and type “iMobileCinema”.

Step 3: Select “install” button at the right top and confirm it to install.

Note: iMobileCinema can only play flash-based video but not flash. Its just a safari plugin so you can’t see any icon of iMobileCinema on your SpringBoard.

How To Use Cydia (Jailbreak Beginner Vol.1)

20 12 2008

Cydia is the 1st Stop after Jailbreak (What is Cydia?)

With iPhone Jailbreak, Cydia will be the first application you need to know and start with. One of top reasons to jailbreak iPhone is to enpower it to install third-party applications. And, Cydia, developed by Jay Freeman, is the heart of all. You may consider Cydia as the App Store for jailbreak iPhone, that lets you download and install third-party applications on iPhone. Personnally, Cydia is like installer manager, its can make up your iPhone with common application for smartphone requirements. Its provide a lot of open source third-party application to install and sometime i called Cydia is “Cydia Installer”.

Cydia Developed by Jay Freeman (Saurik)

Why Cydia and 3rd-Party applications?

As you know, since the release of firmware 2.0, Apple enables every iPhone with the game-changing App Store. Developers can put up application on App Store for every iPhone user to download. Okay then, what’s the point to have Cydia? The short answer is not every application can get through Apple’s approval process and appear in App Store. A very good example is NetShare, which tries to turn iPhone 3G into a wireless modem, that was banned by Apple for some reasons. Cydia is here to fill the gap and lets you download other 3rd party applications that you probably can’t find on App Store.

How To Use Cydia For The Very First Time

Cydia is very easy to use and well manage. If you know how to use App Store, you’ll have no difficulties with Cydia. The first time you launch Cydia, you’ll be asked to select the type of filter:

  1. User (Graphical Only)
  2. Hacker (+Command Line)
  3. Developer (No filter)

For normal user, you can just set the filter to “User (Graphical Only”. With this setting, Cydia will filter out those applications which you’re not interested.

Upgrading Cydia

Followed by the filter setting, you may be prompted to upgrade some essential packages. Just go ahead to upgrade it. This makes sure you’re using the latest version of Cydia. As you can see screenshot below, there is 4 essential packages to upgrade and size for several file to upgrade  its too big. Just tap the “Ignore (Temporary)” button for upgrade it one by one packages. Go to “Changes” at haptic menu and you have to upgrade 4 essential packages to upgrade it one by one.

Cydia’s UI (User Interface)

Cydia offers an intuitive interface for you to manage application packages:

Home – The home screen shows the latest news of Cydia. You’ll also find featured packages, sources information, user guide and other developer-related information here.

Section – You can find all the available applications for download here. Application packages are organized into specific categories and folders.

Changes – What’s the new application just released on Cydia? “Changes” shows you the latest release available and also alerts you for any application upgrade. The latest application will be available at the top list sorted by latest date.

Manage – Keep track with all the installed package. You can use “Manage” to upgrade / uninstall packages. Also, it is the place to add / remove Cydia source.

Search – Search for application in Cydia

You may read my instruction here on how to install one of the favourite Cydia application, called MxTube for example.

How to add repository source in Cydia

Application in Cydia are hosted by different repositories. From time to time, you may add new repository into Cydia. For example, you find a new repository URL (e.g. http://ispaziorepo.com/cydia/apt) which provides great iPhone themes. And you want to install those themes. To make those applications available in Cydia, you have to install the repository first.

As long as you know the repository URL, add a new repository is very straightforward.

  1. Tap “Manage”
  2. Then tap “Source”
  3. Tap “Edit” and then “Add”
  4. Type the repository URL and tap “Add Source”

Cydia will then look up the URL and retrieve any applications available from the new repository. You may see detail instruction on how to add sources via Cydia.

By default, Cydia comes with a list of package sources (i.e. repository). You can find them under “Home” menu of Cydia. Just tap on “More Package Sources” and  install one of them.

Go ahead and enjoy with Cydia. Now the volume 2 has been released, click here to proceed for Jailbreak Beginner Volume 2. Don’t forget to download Cycorder for free that powers your iPhone with Video Recorder.
